(Dubai, UAE)  DrFive is introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based medical diagnostic system for stroke diagnosis for the Middle East and Africa. This is in partnership with South Korean company JLK Inspections. Some key statistics to note regarding stroke in the UAE:

  • Fifty per cent of the stroke patients in the UAE are below the age of 45 years, as compared to the global average, where 80 per cent of stroke patients are above the age of 65 years.
  • Stroke is third leading cause of death in the world and the main reason for adult disability. According the latest data by the World Health Organization(WHO) in upper –middle income countries, stroke is the leading cause of death, followed by cardiac diseases.”
  • In the UAE, after road accidents, stroke is the second leading cause of disability. Annually 7,000-8,000 patients in the UAE get a stroke, this means every hour, one person gets a stroke

As we understand, treatment for brain diseases is dependent on a doctor’s medical experience, relevant medical journals, articles, and other supporting documents.

Doctors worry when stroke-suspicious patients come to the hospital as they will need to decide what are the chances that the patient develops a stroke, what medicines will be needed, what acute treatment is needed if any, and how could a prognosis be presented to the patient. Physicians are known to testify heavy stress during the process of the stroke diagnosis with MRI scans and the accuracy varies much by the level of experience. The AI solution can help doctors in the decision-making process, enhancing the accuracy and reducing the stress of sole decision making.

So, how exactly will the platform work?

Step 1: MRI scan is taken by the hospital or clinic

Step 2: The artificial intelligence algorithm analyzes the image for indicators associated with a stroke. This platform is continuously accumulating MR data sourced nation-wide  in [Korea] for the past 10 years. The system could be built onshore or offshore (on a cloud) as the UAE/Dubai regulation stipulates.

Step 3: Automatic detection, using patented technology, the AI platform can:

  • Detect lesion of stroke
  • Determine cause of stroke for the medicine selection (TOAST) (1. large-artery atherosclerosis, 2. Small-vessel occlusion, 3. Cardioembolism, 4. Stroke of other determined aetiology)
  • Indicate Severity of Stroke as of incidence occurrence (NIHSS) (0 : no symptom ,1~4 : minor, 5~15 : moderate, 16~20 : moderate to severe, 21~42 : severe)

  • Forecast the risk of acute patients whether the symptom is to be deteriorated or not
  • Prognosis of Stroke Prognosis(Rehabilitation treatment plan(mRS)
( Scoring 1~6 after 3 Months after discharge from hospital)

Step 4: The doctor gives his final decision and prescription to the patient.
