What are varicose veins?

If you start to notice bluish or purplish veins appearing, sometimes surrounded by a cluster of smaller veins (spider veins) just underneath your skin, then it is a sign of swollen blood vessels. Varicose veins are usually accompanied by swollen legs, ankles and feet, muscle cramps, and general soreness and aches in the legs. Other symptoms can include itching around the varicose veins, brown discoloration of the skin, bulge of the vein through the skin, and in more serious cases, skin ulcers.

Due to hormonal factors, varicose veins affect women more than men, and especially for pregnant women as more blood is needed to circulate for the baby, and through the legs to support the added weight of pregnancy. These factors exert extra load on the veins and may sometimes weaken or damage valves over time and result in varicose veins mainly in the legs and pelvic area.

What are the different types of varicose vein treatments?

There are 6 types of varicose vein treatments performed in Dubai:

  • Sclerotherapy, or Spider Vein Treatment is a chemical solution injected directly into the veins to make the varicose vein collapse and disappear. Depending on the size and severity of the varicose vein, a vascular surgeon may recommend 1 to 3 sessions to completely remove a varicose vein. This treatment is usually reserved for the smaller spider veins.

  • Simple laser treatment is a treatment using a beam of laser light aimed at the vein outside of the skin. The heat from the laser scars and closes the vein, and blood is rerouted through other veins. This treatment is usually reserved for the smaller spider veins.

  • Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLA) or Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT) is a laser treatment where a laser-tipped fiber is inserted into the vein. The intense heat of the laser clots the blood and over time, the varicose vein disappears and blood is rerouted through other veins.

  • Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation Therapy (EVRF) is a radiofrequency (RF) treatment where a catheter is inserted into the vein and heats it. The intense heat of the RF clots the blood and over time, the varicose vein disappears and blood is rerouted through other veins.

  • Intense Pulse Light (IPL), or photoderm therapy is a treatment using a high-intensity pulsed light to heat up the vein. Unlike EVLA and EVRF no catheter is inserted into the vein, only the heat absorption process causes thermocoagulation (blood clotting) of the vein.

  • Surgical ligation or stripping is a more invasive surgical procedure where the vein is removed or stripped. This treatment is usually reserved for larger varicose veins.

Depending on the size, location and severity of the varicose veins, a final recommended varicose vein treatment will be provided by the vascular surgeon, phlebologist, dermatologist or plastic surgeon using the above effective procedures with minimal down time.

How can I find the right varicose vein treatment for me?

Finding the right surgeon(s) determines everything

A surgery result does not depend on the reputation of a clinic. Ultimately, it is the expertise of the surgeon that determines the outcome. Nothing can replace the skillful hands of a surgeon who has deep insight into the human body and a patient’s aspiration.

Research the credentials, portfolio, and other patients’ reviews of the surgeon(s)

It is difficult for a patient to evaluate the skill of a surgeon. However, there are some standard checklists you should apply to choose the right surgeon.

  • First, ensure that surgeons/specialists/consultants are certified from trustworthy institutions.
  • Second, check if they have excellently performed surgery for a similar case as yours. You may check their portfolio online or get it upon request to the clinic.
  • Third, search up what other patients had to say about the physician that you shortlisted. Platforms like DrFive.com could be a good starting point for your research.

Know your budget and schedule

Most plastic surgeries are elective treatments. In other words, they will not be covered by your health insurance and you need to pay for the entire treatment. Depending on a few factors we will explain below, there are quite big differences in the treatment costs and you need to ensure that treatments from your shortlisted providers are within your budget. Don’t forget to determine when you want to get the surgery prior to contacting clinics. Most sought-after plastic surgeons have a very tight schedule and the next available slots may only open up far beyond your availability. Having a clear timeline can prevent unnecessary last minute surprises.

What are the driving factors for the different prices of varicose vein treatments in Dubai?

Qualifications of the practitioner

Medical groups in Dubai are diverse and numerous. Physicians come from different schools of thought and each gives their own perspective on the best treatment options. Some of these doctors are board certified from the UK, Europe or USA, while others have regional qualifications. All of whom possess a knowledge base with a specific set of training and practical knowledge.

Brand awareness of the clinic

Treatments from more reputable hospitals will usually be costlier than clinics not widely known to people. Institutions make huge investments to build a trusted brand and we, as the end-consumers, are expected to, in return, pay a premium for that brand. Certain local clinics in Dubai have established a history of providing excellent care to people, and in turn, are more expensive than new entrants in the cosmetic treatment field.

Experience of the practitioner

It is quite understandable that you pay more for a service from a more experienced practitioner. For cosmetic procedures, you will usually need to pay more to get treatment from consultants rather than specialists, GPs and other physicians, as they have more expertise and experience in the field.

What are the prices for varicose vein treatments in Dubai?

Many clinics in Dubai will evaluate every candidate’s body, health markers and the expected results to recommend the most suitable varicose vein treatments. Therefore, a complete in-person consultation with a plastic surgeon, vascular surgeon, dermatologist or phlebologist is necessary for a clinic in Dubai to quote a price for the requested varicose vein treatment. As mentioned previously, depending on the size, location and severity of the varicose veins, a final recommended varicose vein treatment will be provided to the patient. In cases where there is pain, swelling and more serious symptoms, certain insurance carriers will be eligible to cover the costs for the varicose vein treatment.
