Patient data on hospital networks is continuously under threat from hackers. They continue to hijack Hospital's medical records, holding them ransom before extorting thousands of dollars from hospital administrators.

On February 18, 2016, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center paid 40 bitcoins (the equivalent of 15,000 USD) to a hacker who hijacked the hospital's database. The hacker stated that the database access would be restored only after the ransom was paid.

While many hospitals have experienced cases of Ransomware, and compromises within their database networks, the growing number of cyberattacks globally is creating a cause for concern for all other sectors of the economy, resulting in heavy losses to business operations.
