We made 2 separate visits to the most mentioned hospitals in our community: American Hospital and Mediclinic - City hospital.

Friday is a day-off for most UAE residents, and so we decided to visit the 2 hospitals for some common health symptoms: headache, and coughing. Both hospitals were compared across multiple criteria we believe would be important for you in choosing your hospital: doctor, staff, prescription, cost, and result. Based on this criteria today’s winner is: “the American Hospital”. Here are the criteria breakdowns:

Doctor: American Hospital - Winner For both hospitals, department specialists are available every day of the week except Friday. Therefore, a check-up is available only through their respective Emergency Rooms. The time we spent with the doctors: Mediclinic - City Hospital at 4 min, and American Hospital at 7 min. The diagnosis procedure at the 2 hospitals were the same: breathing exercises, ENT check, and sinus tap. However, some interesting differences were noticed during the 2 tests. The American Hospital doctor never removed his surgical mask, and requested we remove our shirt to listen more closely to our breathing. It seems American Hospital has a more thorough internal policy regarding in-house contamination, and diagnostic procedure respectively.

Staff: American Hospital - Winner Wait time to see a doctor: Mediclinic - City Hospital at 89 min. and American Hospital at 38 min. Therefore, unless you have more than an hour of spare time on Friday, or if your insurance only covers Mediclinic - City Hospital, then you should try and avoid visiting their emergency room for minor medical issuesPrescription: Depends on your view towards antibiotics. It has been mentioned that some UAE hospitals are either over- or under-prescribing, for whatever reason. The prescriptions we received were as follows: American Hospital - Voltaren 75 mg, Mucosolvan 30 mg, Mediclinic/City Hospital - Voltaren 75 mg, Nasonex Spray, Avalox 400 mg. Based on our visits, only Mediclinic - City Hospital prescribed antibiotics. Also both hospitals prescribed different types of medication. As we are not pharmacists, or doctors, our feedback here is neutral.

Total Cost: American Hospital - Winner Mediclinic - City Hospital costed AED 552, while American Hospital costed AED 390. Even though our insurance carriers covered expenses for both hospitals, the fees for treatment through the ER of American Hospital was the better choice. Yes, so that’s it for our medical experiences at the 2 hospitals. At American hospital, you will most likely spend less time from registration, to walking out with your prescriptions. You will also spend more time with the doctor, and receive a more thorough examination. As a result, American Hospital is the more cost efficient choice.
